"Of Music and Men is a unique dramedy... [that] successfully conveys the writer’s unique voice and sets up a show that there would definitely be an audience for. It would work best as a dramedy on a premium cable network like HBO or Netflix... Does a great job of assembling a diverse, interesting cast and creating a specificity of place in a city that normally doesn’t play host to these kinds of stories."

Why I created this project

Of Music and Men is the story of a single, young entrepreneur struggling to build an independent record label, while navigating the country’s worst city for bachelorettes and an unlikely place for music success: Washington, DC.

This project was made for women and girls--to paint a picture of a young woman, in my protagonist Kenya Shaw, whose ambition serves as a vehicle that takes her places that no other woman has gone in music and where very few have gone in business.

As a multimedia franchise, it will ultimately be known for the  half-hour scripted series; however, as the project has grown in development, it has presented several forms over the last two years: the short film, which garnered some international recognition, the pilot screenplay has received acknowledgement from reputable industry sources, and now the novella series (the literary interpretation of the scripted episodes) will be released. Episode one of the series will be available to the world September 2018.

Of Music and Men was designed with the goal in mind of reaching women and girls through this entertainment platform and inspiring a new class of entrepreneurs.

Whether you're an entrepreneur or not, there's a lot you can gain from this character and this story... So I want you to focus on a few things:

Image
Vision

From running your own business to making an impact in the world in another way, you must have a vision of what that looks like. See it, ask for it, set measureable actions toward manifesting it. Notice how vision plays an important role in Kenya's life throughout the series.

Image
Grit

The choice to persevere when things seem impossible starts in your head and is the definition of grit. Embrace education and experience, outwork everybody, and focus your mind on where you're going. Remember instances when Kenya's grit, not her talent, helps her succeed.

Image
Health

Good sleep, and a good diet and fitness routine is imperative to maintaining health. Sleep, diet, and fitness aren't always easy, but consistency is important to your discipline. Make note of how Kenya maintains a healthy lifestyle on her way to success.

And then, of course, there's the men...

There's nothing wrong with entertainment for entertainment sake, but...

So I want you to focus on a few things:

As you will see through Kenya’s story, having a big dream like running a business is no joke. It’s hard! But I want you to learn as she learns, and grow as she grows.

It’s going to take a lot for Kenya to get to where she wants to be—the place she is in the vision she has of ultimate self. There will be hard work, some smart work, some unique skill, tons of experiences, constant education, faith, and also, of course, luck.

And then, of course, there's the men...

“DC has the lowest marriage rate in the country but the highest number of same-sex couples. DC literally is the gayest place in America! In order to find love, a single girl might have better luck finding--well--a single girl.”

So, here's where things get really interesting. Kenya is cool, confident, fearless, ambitious, and plucky. But that's when it comes to business. When it comes to guys though? Well... like I said: That's where it really gets interesting.

Not every girl enjoys shopping for clothes and shoes, or wearing makeup (especially for no special reason). Some girls are more interested in things that girls are not supposed to be interested in. Those girls make guy-friends really well, but they don't make boyfriends very easily.

This is the plight of our hero!

But the cool thing is, this isn't just Kenya's story. She's got friends: gals, guys, gay, not-gay, with money and without it, successful, and some that are still figuring their lives out. The OM&M franchise takes you into the lives of a diverse ensemble of interconnected millennials navigating, perhaps, the country’s bleakest dating scene.

So keep this in mind as you experience this journey

Veep, House of Cards, and Scandal are all incredible programs, but they only show you what you already know about DC—that it’s a hilarious, but often horrifying, political circus. Of Music and Men is a fresh take on the millennial journey that uses one of the most diverse, transient cities in the world to tell a unique story of the true American dream through the lens of an all-American girl.

I know you'll enjoy this story!

Once this phase (phase 2) is completed, we'll go into phase 3, the scripted series. Here's some insight about what that will look and feel like.

About Kayona

Kayona Ebony Brown is a multi-hyphenate artist and entrepreneur whose mission is fueled by one desire—to tell great stories. As a filmmaker, writer, and actor, Kayona is building the foundation for an independent conglomerate that not only helps the career of other artists, but also creates jobs and offers philanthropic support through the messages of wealth, health, and wellness.
